Roles and permissions

Kinnomy gives every person the access that fits them, in two ways: roles with permissions decide what someone can do in each module, and visibility decides who can see each individual item.

• Owner: sets up the household, looks after billing, and can change anyone’s access.
• Adult: a full member who shares the running of the home.
• Teen: an older child with their own login.
• Child: a younger child, with or without a login.
• Caregiver: someone who helps look after a person in the home.
• Guest: short-term access, like a visiting relative or a house sitter.

Each role comes with default permissions for every module. For each module, a permission is one of three levels:

• None: the module is hidden.
• View: they can see it but not change it.
• Edit: they can add and change things.

The owner can override the defaults for any one person. For example, you might let a responsible teenager edit the shopping list and view Money, or give a house sitter view access to the calendar and contacts only.

Every item, whether an event, a task, a note or a document, has one of three visibility levels:

• Household: everyone in the household can see it.
• Adults only: only the adults in the household can see it.
• Private: only you can see it.

Visibility works alongside permissions. Someone needs access to the module and permission to see the item.

• Sensitive document categories default to Adults only. You can change any document’s visibility.
• The Emergency card is visible to every member, because in an emergency everyone needs it.
• Billing belongs to the household owner.

• Keep surprise plans Private until the day.
• Use a join code set to a limited role when you share it widely.
• Review a Guest’s access when their stay ends.
